Source of infections
How does it spread?
Infection can occur through several common routes, often depending on everyday contact and environmental exposure. Dermatophyte fungi are highly contagious and can spread easily in shared or communal settings, especially where hygiene conditions allow the fungi to survive on surfaces for extended periods.
Infection can occur through:
- Person-to-person contact, particularly through direct skin contact with an infected individual
- Contact with infected animals, especially domestic pets such as cats and dogs that may carry fungal spores
- Contaminated surfaces or objects, including towels, clothing, bedding, shower floors, gym equipment, and hair tools like combs or brushes
- Environmental exposure, such as contact with soil or spending time in warm, humid communal environments where fungi can thrive and persist
